Dear Readers,
My child’s memory of this kindly man in our neighbourhood is vague, but his calling of the dog rings clearly in my head like a bell. If ever there was a clarion call that activated love and welcome, this summoning of the pet is my favourite example. I hope that you enjoy reading this recollection.

Love
He was a quiet man. He lived
with his married sister
but went missing for spells.
He left for work most days.
He didn't usually meet
people's eyes or stand to chat.
But on his return from work,
when he was a few rows of houses
from home, he always called the dog.
The first word was a so for two beats, then a two note drop for the one beat name: - Here Smudge, Here Smudge - And there he was - hurtling out the gateway, veering down the street, driven by the ignition between them. In a frenzy of delight the dog drew near, then leapt in circles around his friend, joy making him jump high, squirm mid-air, moan as he surrounded the man with welcome for the rest of his journey home.

I had to sing my do, re, mi, fa, so in my head to hear his little song-call to his dog. I just had to! Beautiful moment, beautifully caught, Frances. ❤️
